How to Create a Subdomain in cPanel Print

  • 0

A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain, based upon a prefix name that you choose. For example, the example.com domain might have a subdomain for the support department that directs visitors to a separate area of the web site. If the subdomain prefix is support, then the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) is support.example.com.

You can use subdomains whenever you want to create separate areas on your web site that are accessible using different FQDNs.  This can be especially useful if you want to test new features or changes to a website before they are rolled out to the live site.

Please, follow this tutorial to create a subdomain in cPanel.

Creating subdomains
  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. Open the Domains tool:
cPanel - Domains - Domains icon

  3. From the Domains tool main page, click Create a New Domain. The Create a New Domain page appears:

  4. In the Domain text box, type the name of the subdomain you want to add.

  5. Clear the Share document root check box.

  6. In the Document Root text box, type the directory you want to use, or use the directory suggested by cPanel.

There are potential risks to placing the document root in subdirectories beneath an existing website. (For example, by hosting a site in the public_html directory, and a site in a subdirectory beneath the public_html directory.) Some of these risks are:

    • Websites in subdirectories can conflict with websites in the parent directories (particularly WordPress sites or sites that rely heavily on rules in .htaccess files).
    • Websites in subdirectories are more likely to be negatively affected if websites in the parent directories get hacked, or if there are malicious redirects.

For these reasons, we recommend placing the document root for a subdomain in its own dedicated directory outside of the public_html directory.

The following names are reserved on managed accounts, so you should not use them for new subdomains:

    • cpanel
    • ftp
    • mail
    • webdisk
    • webmail
    • secure
    • www
    • whm

  7. Click Submit. Alternatively, click Submit and Create Another if you want to create more than one subdomain.

You should see a success message that the subdomain has been created.
